The UPSC CSE is conducted to recruit candidates for various prestigious civil services positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and UPSC Syllabus other allied services.

The UPSC CSE consists of three stages:
