Look through the radiator filler neck to see if the coolant flows.

The coolant flows through the light tubes that make up the radiator's core and is cooled by the airflow. From there, it flows out of the radiator, through the lower radiator hose, and back to the water pump. By this time, the engine coolant valve is cooled off and ready to collect more heat from the engine.
