Targeting Abnormality with Gamma Knife

With the imaging and image fusion complete, the neurosurgeon can now precisely target the abnormality in the brain. The treatment plan is developed using specialized Gamma Knife nife planning software, which takes into account the size, shape, and location of the target. The software calculates the optimal angles and positions of the gamma radiation beams to ensure that they intersect precisely at the target, while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues.

The Gamma Knife machine consists of a helmet-like device containing an array of small radiation sources, typically cobalt-60 or cesium-137. These sources emit highly focused beams of gamma radiation that converge on the target area within the brain. The precise targeting and overlapping of these beams allow for a high dose of radiation to be delivered to the target while sparing the surrounding healthy tissues.
