Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the east coast of Africa. Physiologically, it is essential for the Mascarene Islands. The capital is Port Louis. Mauritius is about 500 miles (800 km) east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The level is lined with small hills that may have formed the rim of an ancient well of lava; The most notable point (2,717 feet [828 meters]) is the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire in the southwest. Two notable streams, the Grand River Southeast and the Black River, are essential sources of hydroelectric power. Lake Vacoas, one of the primary supplies, is the main source of water.
