If you've spent any time in Los Santos, you'll know the character switch wheel is one of GTA 5's neatest little tricks. Hold Down on the D-Pad, flick the right stick, and you can jump between Franklin, Michael, and Trevor once the story opens them up. A lot of players notice the empty slot at the bottom and assume there's some hidden story character waiting there. There isn't, not in the usual campaign sense. That fourth slot is tied to GTA Online, so if you've already set up your online profile or picked up GTA V Accounts for a quicker start, that space can show your custom online character instead of a blank outline.



What the fourth slot actually does
The fourth character on the wheel is your GTA Online character. Once you create one through GTA Online, the empty silhouette at the bottom of the wheel changes. It doesn't add a new person to Michael, Franklin, and Trevor's story missions. It simply gives you a fast way to move from Story Mode into Online. Pull the right stick down while the wheel is open, select your online character, and the game will begin loading GTA Online. It's handy, though not instant, because you're still switching modes rather than swapping to another story protagonist.



How to make the slot appear
To unlock that bottom option, you need to enter GTA Online and create a character. The game will walk you through the setup, including appearance, basic details, and the opening online sequence. After that, return to Story Mode and open the character wheel again. You should see your online character in the lower position. If it still looks empty, don't panic. Sometimes the game needs a clean mode switch, a save reload, or a restart before the wheel updates. It's GTA, after all. A bit messy now and then.



Can you unlock another story character
Players often hope there's a secret fourth lead hiding behind a mission chain, maybe Lamar, Amanda, or one of the more memorable side characters. The main campaign doesn't work that way. You only play the story through Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Still, there is another route if you just want to mess around as different people. Director Mode lets you control many characters and NPCs outside normal missions. You can access it through the Interaction Menu in supported versions, or by dialing 1-999-5782-5368 on the in-game phone. Some actors only become available after story progress, so you won't have everyone from the start.



Why Director Mode is worth trying
Director Mode is less about progression and more about playing with the sandbox. You can change the time of day, set weather, turn on cheats, and drop yourself into Los Santos as someone who'd never normally be playable. Want to wander around as a cop, a beachgoer, or a story side character you've unlocked? That's where you do it. If you're jumping between Story Mode and Online often, or looking to build up a fresh profile, some players choose to buy cheap GTA V Accounts before spending more time with the online side, but the campaign itself still keeps its main trio front and centre.
